Liberal Democrats lead calls for action on damp and mould in social housing
Liberal Democrat councillors will call for action to combat damp and mould in social housing at a crucial meeting of Trafford Council on Wednesday (19/07).
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Liberal Democrat councillor Shaun Ennis, who represents Timperley Central and Broomwood, said, “Damp and mould complaints are rife across Trafford’s social housing. It is an absolute disgrace that people are living in conditions that are so dangerous and harmful.”
“Too often, when people reach out for help, they are not getting meaningful support. I know families who have waited years for action. The risk to their own health and their children’s health in that time is enormous and it is not good enough.”
Fellow Timperley Central representative, councillor Simon Lepori is bringing a motion to the council which would force town hall bosses to use more enforcement powers where housing associations are found not to be acting swiftly enough on damp and mould.
Councillor Lepori said, “We know what happens when those in positions of responsibility ignore poor living conditions in social housing. We saw the tragic death of a young boy in Rochdale recently because of exactly those failings. People in Trafford are being forced to put up with abysmal conditions too; and housing associations are consistently too slow on the uptake.”
“It’s not all down to the Housing Associations though. I want to see the Council step up and acknowledge that it can play a leading role in addressing this scandal. People living in social housing deserve a fair deal and I hope the wider council will support the Liberal Democrat action plan on Wednesday evening.”
