Lib Dems Successfully stop Andy Burnham's plans to close Sale Fire Station

12 Jul 2023

After the intervention of Lib Dem Councillors, cuts to Sale Fire Station to be rejected in full. It will continue to provide acontinuous service.

Lib Dem monition saves Sale Fire Station from a reduced service (12 July 2023)

This week, Trafford Councillors met to discuss plans to cut Sale Fire Station from a 24-hour station to a 'Day Crew model', meaning that the station would only be crewed between 8:30am and 6:30pm. Under the proposals, crews would then be 'on call' through the night, leading to 4 minute delayed response time to emergency calls.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service say the proposals will mean that the service can field an additional two fire engines based closer to Manchester city centre.

Liberal Democrat councillors first hit out against these plans last month, calling them "unthinkable" and stating that they should be rejected in full. Read more here:

An emergency meeting was then held at Trafford Town Hall on Monday 10th July to debate the future of Sale Fire Station.

With Labour councillors proposing a pause before taking a decision, Liberal Democrat Will Frass stepped in, calling for an outright rejection of the Day Crewing proposals until a more considered alternative can be presented which protects Sale's 24-hour status.

The committee agreed with the Lib Dem team and the plans will now be rejected in full by Trafford Council. This is the right decision for the Sale community and for the hardworking and passionate crew at Sale Fire Station. We will continue to question these proposals and guard against cuts to frontline emergency services in Trafford.

Have your say on cuts to Sale Fire Station (7 June 2023)

Don't miss the opportunity to have your say on proposals that would move Sale Community Fire Station from a 24-hour station to a 'Day Crew' model.

Back in January, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham told us all he didn't want to put taxes up during the cost-of-living crisis, but he had to in order to avoid cuts to frontline services.

But in June, we're being presented with those cuts anyway!

Liberal Democrats say no to any cuts to frontline emergency services. Read more here:
