Government must fund flood risk gauges for Fairywell Brook say Trafford Liberal Democrats

Press Release

Trafford's Liberal Democrat councillors are campaigning for more funding for the Environment Agency after a multi-million pound flooding resilience programme for Fairywell Brook in Timperley was halted due to a lack of data.

Leader of Trafford Liberal Democrats, councillor Shaun Ennis said, "Everyone in Timperley knows there is a local flood risk.  Whenever we have heavy rain, Fairywell Brook bursts its banks and in really bad weather, homes can and have been at risk."

"Since the worst of the flooding in 2021, the Liberal Democrats have been working with the Environment Agency towards flooding resilience measures for Beech Fields.  The problem is, the Environment Agency don't have the local data in place to justify the multi-million pound investment that we need."

"So the Liberal Democrats have been asked directly by our colleagues in the Environment Agency to campaign for more government funding for things like flood risk gauges - so we can use that data to get a flooding resilience programme over the line in Timperley."

All six Liberal Democrat councillors in Trafford have signed a letter to the Labour Leader of Trafford Council asking him to join them in lobbying the government to fund extra flood risk gauges for local rivers and brooks.

Councillor Ennis said, "Liberal Democrats will work with others to get our residents in Timperley a fair deal.  This flooding resilience work needs to go ahead and for that to happen, we need the data to support it.  I hope the Leader of the Council will support our campaign."
